Carpenter Dam

May 21st, 2009

I have been laid up since April 8th and it has been killing me. There is no way I can take my big old boat out right now. I did however get to do some shore fishing at Carpenter Dam. The fishing was good I seen alot of white bass and Stripers being caught. I tried something a little differant and tried a soft plastic crawfish, the results are the walleye shown below.

The following week on a rainy Saturday morning Matt and I went to a playground by the dam, there is a small pond there and it was full of decent size catfish. It didn't take long to get our fill as the picture on the right show.

Old School Fishing

Lyle J. Hart Jr.

Looking around I dug up some old fishing pictures from when my family lived in Minnesota. I had to scanned the pictures, most were taken on a 110 camera.

Late Night Walleyes

These Walleye pictures were taken around 1989, shore fishing a channel between Cass Lake and Pike bay in Minnesota. The water was getting cold, it was early fall and ice was forming around the edge of the lake. The big eyes started hitting on a Rapala, almost every cast. The big one was 33inchs, the other was 29inchs. I took 6 big fish in 45 minutes, I never did weigh them but I figured the big one was around 13 lbs.

Fishing Canada with my Boys

Here are a couple of pictures from a Canadian fishing trip my boys and I took during 1993. We sure had a good time, a boat full of walleyes, northern pike and some smallmouth bass.

Lake 13, Largemouth Bass

My father-in-law worked and lived his whole life in the woods of northern Minnesota. He took me out to Lake 13, it was crystal clear and hardly touched by humans. All the land around the Lake was forestry land, no marinas, buildings, or houses. I would spend the whole day fishing this God's country lake.

Canada 1990

I went fishing in Canada for the first time in 1990, it was an eye opener. John, Brett, and I made up the crew. We drove to Sioux Lookout, Ontario and then we took an hour boat ride out on the English river system to our cabin on a small island. I don't remember the names of the lakes we fished, I do remember we seen alot of water during that week. We mostly fished walleyes, but we did get into some Northern Pike a couple of times and once in awhile we would catch some small mouths on topwater baits.

Even lunch time wasn't wasted; we would find an island with a deep channel (60+ft) and cook our shore lunch. But the first thing we did when we got to our island was rig up lines with herring and take them by boat out in the channel. Back on the island we wrapped the lines around a beer can, we were set. Eat our lunch, take a nap and wait for a Lake Trout. The Laker below went 17lbs. The northerns averaged 10-15lbs, walleyes 5-7lbs.

Fishing Arkansas 2009

Lyle J. Hart Jr.

2009 looks to be a great fishing year for the Hart clan. It is still early in the year and we have figured out some early season crappie's, biggest so far 1 1/4lb. I am learning more about these southern crappies every time I go out. I didn't know a northern crappies takes 7-8 years to hit 2lbs while a southern fish reachs 2lbs in 4 years, I am impressed. I really enjoying chasing these slabs and as a bonus I think crappie is one of the best eating fish, next to the walleye.

I had been hearing good things about the trout fishing at Carpenter dam on Lake Cathrine, it sounded like the perfect place to get my 4yr old grandson Matthew out for a afternoon of fishing and I sure was right. The weather was great and the rainbows were biting. Matt wanted a fishing rod just like grandpa's so we rigged up a UL pole with a spinning reel and some 4lb test cajun line, he was set.

We got to the dam and headed to a spot in close on the rocks and it didn't take more then 5 minutes and we had fish on the line. Matt was pretty excited, he did great. He watched the end of the pole for the twitch, then he grabbed the pole and started reeling. He landed a good 12in Rainbow all by himself, I was sure a proud grandpa. in 45 minutes we had caught 6 fish and kept 4 good ones, all about 11-12 inchs. Matt soon had enough he was bored, he wanted to go, it was Matt's afternoon.
